Now I like to think that I am able to appreciate all types of art but this just takes the biscuit. In an apparent bid to outdo the "Angel of the North" designer Mark Wallinger wants to build a 164ft tall giant white horse. To give you an idea of scale it will be as tall as Nelson's column. Most people cannot erect a 6 ft shed in their own garden without being told to take it down as it is "not in keeping with the local area". Quite how the designer thinks he is going to escape the attention of the local planning office is anyone guess.
Leaving aside the issue of this artworks obscene scale the fact that it will cost over £2 million should raise a few eyebrows; especially in today's economic climate. I am sure that a large proportion of this money will come from the government in some form or another through grants etc. Should the government really be spending its money on such projects when it struggles so helplessly with the economy. Perhaps we can start a poll on here to see how else we could spend £2 million.
Perhaps Mark Wallinger should re-design it as a white elephant, I'm sure this would be far more appropriate.
